The process is a little different in Windows 7: From the Color 1 dropdown, choose the color you want to use with selected items (cells, text, email, and so on).

It's sloppy.sometimes it will start the selection a cell or two away from the desired cell, or not even allow selection at all. In excel, I can no longer reliably left click, hold and drag to select a specific range of cells.
